Cathedral by Jean Linard A jewel of Singular Art

Discover a magical site listed as a Historic Monument in the heart of the Berry region between Bourges and Sancerre. Jean Linard, artist, potter, sculptor, engraver, painter and builder, inspired in particular by the Facteur Cheval, Gaudí and Picassiette, created the work of his life: an open-air cathedral. A building made of brick, stone, mosaic and salvaged objects in his garden, populated by colourful characters! The site was abandoned for several years, but in 2022 Charlotte and William decided to take up the challenge of saving this jewel of singular art.

Come and discover or rediscover this extraordinary place. You won’t leave indifferent!

The Cathedral

Neuvy-deux-Clochers, near La Borne, a village that has been home to potters since the 15th century, not far from Sancerre and Menetou-Salon, is home to Jean Linard’s Cathedral.

An artist, potter, sculptor, engraver, painter and builder, Jean Linard was born in 1931, studied engraving in Paris at the École Estienne and then returned to his native region.

With ceramist Anne Kjaersgaard, he set up as a potter in La Borne in 1959. He then bought the land, a former flint quarry, and began building his house and a three-chamber Japanese kiln in 1961. From 1974 onwards, he used a gas kiln, which gave him greater control over the firing process. He continued to improve his house until the end of the 1970s.

At the beginning of the 80s, he embarked on his work: the construction of his Cathedral in a resolutely universal spirit. He drew inspiration from Gaudí, the Facteur Cheval and Picassiette. He turned his garden into a work of art that he nurtured throughout his life, populated with fantastic pottery, even on the roofs, and with figures over two metres high made of iron and mosaics, whom he called “ the Guardians of the Temple “. He used several techniques and materials to create his works: stoneware, raku, iron, mosaics, cement and salvaged objects.

Following Jean Linard’s death in 2010, the site was listed as a Historic Monument in 2012, put up for sale and then managed by an association from 2013 to 2019. At the end of 2019, it was closed by municipal decree for safety reasons and left to deteriorate.

In September 2020, Charlotte, who had always known about this place, her parents being near Henrichemont, showed it to her partner, originally from Vendée. The site was for sale…

After 22 months of negotiating and looking for finance, the banks were unable to help (2020: in the middle of the COVID and an atypical site, listed as a Historic Monument, in poor condition requiring major work and up for sale for 10 years…) Charlotte and William were finally able to sign the deed of sale in June 2022. After passing through the Safety Commission, they were able to open the site to visitors on 14 July 2022. Their aim is to save and restore the work, and to share this place by enabling as many people as possible to discover or rediscover it. It’s a rare example of Singular Art that needs to be preserved.

Both pastry chefs, they have worked for the likes of Christophe Michalak and Pierre Hermé, and would like to share their expertise with you so that you can enjoy a timeless moment in this very special setting. They offer home-made, local cuisine all day long, indoors or on the terrace.

Did you know?

Jean Linard ‘s work is representative of Art Singulier, a deeply religious art form in which he created a fairytale world of peace and serenity. His spirit lives on, his ashes scattered around the tomb he built himself.
