AUBIGNY-SUR-NÈRE Land of the Scots

The city of the Stuarts has a unique history in France!
For 250 years, the royal town of Aubigny became a “Scottish land”, given by Charles VII in 1423 to John Stuart of Darnley to reward the support of the Stuarts and Scottish soldiers for the French crown. The Stuart lineage left its mark on French history. Aubigny was completely rebuilt following a fire in 1512. The magnificent timber-framed houses bear witness to the skills of the carpenters and sculptors of the time. A heritage and a history to discover.

Aubigny-sur-Nère

Founded, according to tradition, by Philippe-Auguste at the very end of the 12th century, the seigneury of Aubigny and its castle were closely linked to the royal house. Possessed by Jean de Berry (brother of King Charles V) at the end of the 14th century, they returned to the hands of the crown after the duke’s death in 1416.

In 1423, King Charles VII granted the seigneury of Aubigny to Jean Stuart de Darnley, Constable of the Scottish army, and to his male descendants, in recognition of his invaluable support against the English during the Hundred Years’ War.

A century later, in 1512, a violent fire ravaged the town. Under the impetus of Robert Stuart, Lord of Aubigny, the town rose from the ashes and acquired the superb timber-framed houses that can still be admired today.

The line of the Stuarts died out in 1672, and it was to the Duchess of Portsmouth, Louise de Keroual, mistress of King Henry II of England, that Louis XIV donated the seigneury (for services rendered to the crown…).

Towards the end of the 17th century, Louise de Keroual had the château radically altered, in particular with new openings and interior fittings (ceilings, floors and fireplaces). The west wing dates from this period. Neglected after the Duchess’s death(around 1734), the château was seized during the Revolution and sold in 1812 to the town of Aubigny, which used it for its administrative services. The south wing was largely rebuilt at the end of the 19th century. The château was completely restored in the 1920s by Paul Guérin, an Aubigny architect. Further restoration work was undertaken in 2018.

of the Auld Alliance

The Auld Alliance Interpretation Centre (CIAA) opened its doors in 2019 and is located on the ground floor of the Château des Stuarts .

Through a playful scenography and a set of interactive multimedia devices, this site helps visitors understand the historical link that has united France and Scotland since the 13th century.

The House of Tartan Yarn

In this old house in the town centre, which the local council acquired and then restored in its entirety, the town council wanted to showcase the skills and techniques associated with thread, in reference to the textile industry that flourished in Aubigny-sur-Nère between the 16th and 17th centuries, with the cardeux and royal draperies, and also in the 20th century with the presence of textile industries such as shirt-making.

François 1er Gallery

The Maison dite François Ier is a timber-framed house in the heart of the town, and is probably one of the oldest in the town, having been built in 1519 following the fire of 1512.

Acquired and renovated by the town council, it is now an art gallery open to the public from spring to late autumn. Painters, ceramists and/or sculptors are exhibited here: visiting these exhibitions is as much an opportunity to discover these works as it is to appreciate the beauty of the architecture of this house.
