Cathedral
by Jean Linard
 Singular Art Jewel

Discover a magical Monument Historique site in the heart of the Berry region between Bourges and Sancerre. Jean Linard, artist, potter, sculptor, engraver, painter and builder, inspired in particular by the Facteur Cheval, Gaudí and Picassiette, created the work of his life: an open-air cathedral. An edifice made of bricks, stones, mosaics and salvaged objects in his garden, populated by colorful characters! The site had been abandoned for several years, and in 2022 Charlotte and William decided to take up the challenge of saving this jewel of Singular Art.

Come and discover or rediscover this extraordinary place. You won’t leave indifferent!

The Cathedral

In Neuvy-deux-Clochers, near La Borne, a village of potters since the 15th century, not far from Sancerre and Menetou-Salon, stands the Cathedral of Jean Linard.

Artist, potter, sculptor, engraver, painter and builder, Jean Linard was born in 1931, studied engraving in Paris at the École Estienne, then returned to his native region.

With ceramist Anne Kjaersgaard, he set up as a potter in La Borne in 1959. He then bought this land, a former flint quarry, and began building his house and a three-chamber Japanese kiln in 1961. From 1974 onwards, he used a gas-fired kiln, giving him greater control over the firing process. He continued to upgrade his house until the end of the 70s.

In the early ’80s, he embarked on his masterpiece: the construction of his Cathedral in a resolutely universal spirit. He drew inspiration from Gaudí, Facteur Cheval and Picassiette. He turned his garden into a lifelong work of art, populated by fantastic pottery, even on the roofs, and by two-metre-high figures in iron and mosaics, whom he called “ the Guardians of the Temple “. He used a variety of techniques and materials to create his works: stoneware, raku, iron, mosaics, cement and salvaged objects.

Following Jean Linard’s death in 2010, the site was listed as a Historic Monument in 2012, put up for sale, then managed by an association from 2013 to 2019. At the end of 2019, it was closed by municipal decree for safety reasons and left to deteriorate.

In September 2020, Charlotte, who had always known about this place, her parents being near Henrichemont, showed it to her companion, originally from Vendée. The site was for sale…

After 22 months of transaction and search for financing, the banks not having followed (2020: in the middle of COVID and an atypical site, listed as a Historic Monument, in poor condition requiring major work and for sale for 10 years…) Charlotte and William were finally able to sign the deed of sale in June 2022. After passing through the Safety Commission, they were able to open the site to visitors on July 14, 2022. Their aim is to save and restore the work of art, and to share this place by enabling as many people as possible to discover or rediscover it. It’s a rare testimony to Singular Art, and should be preserved.

Both pastry chefs, having made their mark in the great houses of Christophe Michalak and Pierre Hermé, they would like to share their expertise with you, and allow you to extend a timeless moment in this very special setting. They welcome you on the terrace and in their new dining room. They offer a simple menu until they can complete the work required to set up a professional laboratory.
